Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings Chapter 29~30

Part TWENTY-NINE Talking Up the Dead Nate hadn't seen his old educator, Gerard ;Growl; Ryder, in fourteen years, however aside from the way that he was pale, the researcher looked precisely equivalent to Nate recalled that him: short and amazing, a jaw like a blade, and a long dive of silver hair that was continually taking steps to fall into his light green eyes. â€Å"You're the Colonel?† Nate inquired. Ryder had vanished twelve years back. Lost adrift in the Aleutians. â€Å"I played with the title for some time. For a week or so I was Man-Meat the Magnificent, however I believed that seemed like I may be making up for something, so I chose to go with something military-sounding. It was a hurl up between Captain Nemo from Twenty Thousand Leagues and Colonel Kurtz from Heart of Darkness. I at long last chose to go with just ‘the Colonel. It's more ominous.† â€Å"That it is.† Once again the truth was taking a relevant tilt for Nate, and he was attempting to shield from falling. This once splendid, splendid man was sitting in a mass of goo looking at picking his megalomaniacal pen name. â€Å"Sorry to keep you hanging tight for such a long time before I brought you down here. In any case, presently that you're here, how's it feel to remain within the sight of God?† â€Å"Respectfully, sir, you're a screwing squirrel.† â€Å"This doesn't feel right,† Clay murmured to Libby Quinn. â€Å"We shouldn't have a burial service when Nate's still alive.† â€Å"It's not a funeral,† said Libby. â€Å"It's a service.† They were all there at the Whale Sanctuary. In the first column: Clay, Libby, Margaret, Kona, Clair, and the Old Broad. Moving back: Cliff Hyland and Tarwater with their group, the Count and his examination grommets, Jon Thomas Fuller and the entirety of the Hawaii Whale Inc. pontoon teams, which comprised around thirty individuals. On back: whale cops, barkeeps, and several servers from Longee's. From the harbor: live-aboards and contract commanders, the harbormaster, stall young ladies and jump guides, pontoon hands and a person who worked the espresso counter at the fuel dock. Likewise, analysts from the University of Hawaii and, for some odd reason, two dark coral jumpers †all jammed into the auditorium, the roof fans blending their scents together into the night breeze. Mud had planned the administration at night so the scientists wouldn't miss a day of the examination season. â€Å"Still,† said Clay. â€Å"He was a lion,† said Kona, a tear sparkling in his eye. â€Å"A incredible lion.† This was the most noteworthy commendation a Rastafarian can offer to a man. â€Å"He's not dead,† said Clay. â€Å"You realize that, you doof.† â€Å"Still,† said Kona It was a Hawaiian burial service in that everybody was in flip-slumps and shorts, however the men had put on their best salud shirts, the ladies their crispest bloomed dresses, and many had brought leis and head laurels, which they hung over the wreaths at the front of the room that spoke to Nathan Quinn and Amy Earhart. A Unity Church serve represented ten minutes about God and the ocean and science and commitment, and afterward he opened up the floor to any individual who had a comment. There was a long delay before the Old Broad, wearing a grinning whale-print muumuu and twelve white orchids in her hair, tottered to the platform. â€Å"Nathan Quinn lives on,† she said. â€Å"Can I get an amen!† yelled Kona. Clair yanked his residual dreadlocks. All the scholars and graduate understudies took a gander at one another, eyes wide, confounded, thinking about whether any of them had really brought a so be it that they could surrender. Nobody had revealed to them they were going to require a so be it, or they would have stuffed one. All the harbor individuals and Lahaina residents were threatened by the science individuals, and they were not going to surrender a so be it before these eggheads, no chance. The whale cops didn't care for the way that Kona was not in prison, and they weren't giving him poo, not to mention a so be it. At last one of the dark coral jumpers who had that night found the ideal mixed drink for lamenting in a hit of rapture, a joint, and a forty of beer, murmured a weak ;Amen; over the grievers like a languid, stinky, morning-breath kiss. â€Å"And I know,† proceeded with the Old Broad, â€Å"that on the off chance that it were not for his willfulness in acquiring a pastrami on rye for that vocalist in the channel, he would be here with us today.† â€Å"But on the off chance that he were here with us †† murmured Clair. â€Å"Shhhhhh,† shushed Margaret Painborne. â€Å"Don't you shush me, or you'll be chomping rug through a straw.† â€Å"Please, honey,† said Clay. The Old Broad babbled about conversing with the whales each day for the last a quarter century, about how she'd known Nate and Clay and Cliff when they previously went to the island and how youthful and dumb they were at that point, and how that had changed, as now they weren't that youthful any longer. She discussed what an insightful and obliging man Nate was, yet how, on the off chance that he wasn't so absentminded, he may have discovered a tolerable lady to adore him, and how she didn't have a clue where he was, however on the off chance that he didn't recover his base to Maui soon, she would wind his ear off when she saw him. And afterward she plunked down to reverberating quietness and tittering compassion, and everybody took a gander at Clay, who took a gander at a roof fan. Following a long, ungainly moment, when the Unity serve needed to make a beeline for the platform two or multiple times, as though he would need to call an end to the administration, Gilbert Box †the Count †got up. He wasn't wearing his cap for once, however he despite everything wore his mammoth wraparound shades, and without the equalization of the monster cap, the glasses on his rakish casing caused him to seem insectlike, an especially pale asking mantis in khakis. He balanced the receiver, made a sound as if to speak with extraordinary ceremony, and stated, â€Å"I never enjoyed Nathan Quinn†¦Ã¢â‚¬ And everybody sat tight for the â€Å"but,† however it never came. Gilbert Box gestured to the group and sat down. Gilbert's grommets hailed. Precipice Hyland talked straightaway, speaking for ten minutes about what an incredible person and fine analyst Nate was. At that point Libby really went ahead and talked for a long time about Nate's Canadianness and how he had once safeguarded the Great Seal of British Columbia as being better than the various common seals in that it delineated a moose and a smash smoking a hookah, demonstrating a feeling of collaboration and resilience, while Ontario's seal portrayed a moose and an elk attempting to eat a bear, and Saskatchewan's indicated a moose and a lion burning down a fondue pot †the two of which plainly misused the inborn Canadian dread of moose †and the seal of Quebec portrayed a lady in a robe blazing one of her boobs at a lion, which was simply screwing French. He'd named all the areas and their seals, however those were the ones Libby could recall. At that point Libby wheezed and plunked down. â€Å"That's what you could come up with?† murmured Clay. â€Å"What, five years of marriage?† Libby murmured in his ear, â€Å"I needed to go with something that wouldn't undermine Margaret. I don't see you raging the podium.† â€Å"I'm not going to discuss my dead companion when I don't believe he's dead.† What's more, before they knew it, Jon Thomas Fuller was at the platform being grateful for Nate's help for his new task, at that point going on about the amount he acknowledged how the whale-examine network had gotten behind his new â€Å"dolphin connection center,† which was all huge news to the whale-inquire about network who was tuning in. During the short discourse, Clair had gotten Clay's neck in what seemed, by all accounts, to be a grasp of relief yet was in reality a strangle hold she'd gained from watching cops on the news. â€Å"Baby, in the event that you attempt to follow him, I'll have you oblivious on the floor in three seconds. That would be discourteous to Nate's memory.† But her exertion left Kona unattended on the opposite side, and he figured out how to hack ;Bullshit; as Jon Thomas sat down. Next a graduate understudy who worked for Cliff Hyland stood and discussed how Nate's work had motivated her to go into the field. At that point somebody from the Hawaiian Department of Conservation and Resources discussed how Nate had consistently been at the front line of preservation and security of the humpbacks. At that point the harbormaster discussed Nate's being a skilled and honest pontoon pilot. By and large, an hour had passed, and when it appeared glaringly evident that nobody else was going to stand up, the priest pushed toward the platform yet was outsmarted by Kona, who had slipped from Clair's steely grasp and high-ventured his way to the front. â€Å"Like old Auntie state, Nathan is living on. In any case, nobody here today say a thing regarding the Snowy Biscuit, who †Jah's kindness be on her †is taking care of fishes in the briny blue about now.† (Sniff.) â€Å"I know her lone brief timeframe, yet I want to state for us all, that I generally need to see her exposed. Truth, mon. Furthermore, when I think upon the round, firm †; † †she will be missed,† Clay stated, completing for the artificial Hawaiian. He had braced a hand over Kona's mouth and was hauling him out the entryway. â€Å"She was a splendid kid.† With that, the pastor bounced to the platform, expressed gratitude toward everybody for coming, and announced, with a supplication, all regards forked over the required funds. So be it. â€Å"Well, truly, psychological well-being can be a problem,† said Growl Ryder. â€Å"Being God's still, small voice is an extreme job.† Nate glanced around, and, as though following his look, the Goo retreated around them until they were in a chamber around fifteen feet in measurement †an air pocket. It resembled outdoors in somebody's bladder, Nate thought. â€Å"That better?† Ryder inquired. Nate understood that the Colonel was the one controlling the state of the chamber they wer

Negotiator Concern for Relationship and Goal

Question: Portray about the Negotiator's Concern for Relationship and Goal? Answer: Presentation: Arrangement is alluded to an appropriate social procedure through which every single associated individuals alongside their clashing advantages really decide the manner by which they are additionally going to dole out assets in any case cooperate for what's to come. This is additionally a social procedure as individuals should really connect with one another for the accomplishment and achievement of their genuine and wanted results. Ordinarily, exchange additionally was seen like a pugnacious procedure which is likewise a fight in the midst of the foes. Albeit scarcely any individuals despite everything hold such convictions, just as this methodology yet exists mentalities in addition to try and proof are modifying step by step. Arrangement likewise is presently observed broadly like an appropriate community oriented procedure which is used to discover best arrangements proposed for everybody who is engaged with the circumstance. It is in all actuality a methods through which two gat herings show up at a shared choice which is helpful in a few or the other method to both the gatherings. Mastery of any one gathering can hamper the procedure of exchange. a) Scenario 1- Pleasing style-This style really will demonstrate the ability towards addressing needs and prerequisites of the other party at cost of individual's self needs. Here I am the accommodator and being this I know the spot when to really yield to the next gathering, however this can likewise be convinced towards giving up a position when it really isn't appropriately justified. I am by and large exceptionally self-assured and enormously agreeable. I will attempt to comprehend the contentions given by my manager as I need to keep up a decent since a long time ago run connection with him (Lagnado Shanks, 2007). Settlement additionally is proper when issues matter extra to other gathering in any case when harmony likewise is additional significant than the triumphant case, or when one individual needs to get in the situation towards gathering on favor that different gives. Winning here doesn't supplies all joy to both of the gatherings fairly boiling down to a determination where a connectio n will be suitably kept up would battle the gatherings more. Since I am haggling with a business I will apply obliging clash where I accept that being pleasant is extra indispensable than winning the circumstance. Here I will attempt to augment sympathy and limit self-assuredness. In such kind of procedure I will infer a legitimate fulfillment for myself and will likewise address my own issues and necessities. Since I am enjoyed work exchange I additionally dont need to free the activity for senseless reasons. I simply need to haggle so I can procure as much as could reasonably be expected. Here I am discerning just as instinctive about the enthusiastic state and even can identify the unpretentious verbal just as non verbal signs. I additionally will in general convey a decent connection with my manager and quite will bear the cost of sharpness in my connection whenever conveyed further. Along these lines this technique will be fit for me as it conveys a few positive qualities like: Help in support of my connection with my manager on since a long time ago run Bolster me in boiling down to a common choice without hampering my relationship and my picture (Oye Esvelt, 2014) Will empower me to by one way or another persuade the business and bring the ball into my court. b) Scenario 2- Serious clash style-Some individuals who really tend towards the serious style additionally take an extremely firm stand and severe choice and furthermore comprehend just as appropriately realize what they as a general rule need. They even as a rule work from the situation of the power and force which is drawn from something like the position and rank, skill just as convincing capacity (Pedler, 1976). Such a style can likewise be helpful when there exist a crisis just as a choice must be promptly settled on; when choice is additionally extremely disagreeable; or additionally when the guarding against some individual who is in any event, attempting to create circumstance childishly. In addition it can likewise leave individuals with a sentiment of getting wounded, unsatisfied just as angry while utilized in lower critical conditions. Since I am with a vehicle vendor and have numerous options of vehicle sellers in the neighborhood will apply the procedure of serious clash style as it would assist me with maximizing self-assuredness just as limit the sympathy. Being a serious sort I will be equipped for appreciating arrangement and will be fit for commanding and controlling the correspondence. Since numerous decisions are accessible tome effectively I can command the dealer as my bartering power has naturally ascended. This system will likewise assist me with paying less consideration towards the connection basic the question as I don't need to convey this connection with the merchant further for since a long time ago run (Russell, n.d.). I unequivocally feel this is a lose-win circumstance and I really would prefer not to lose it since I additionally feel that this equivalent vehicle probably won't be found in different outlets. This system has a few attributes: The procedure will make me fall into winning circumstance where I would have the option to command the dealer as there are number of venders accessible in the area. The purchaser can squeeze the dealer to sell the item in the cost cited by the purchaser. The procedure will enable the purchaser to achieve his points and objectives (FLOWER, 1996) c) Halo impact can be perceptual contortion for this situation. The applicant may have arranged and has won and such circumstance previously and furthermore is applying a similar idea here too. At the point when I take such an alternate route, I will really convey a feeling that additionally may have as a general rule been made in any such condition previously (Mills Oneal, 1971). Recency impact can be bending occurring for this situation as I am feeling that I will get a similar vehicle in each outlet yet perhaps I would not prevail during the time spent achieving the vehicle of a similar sort. This may later leave me troubled as I probably won't locate a similar quality all over the place (Natarajan, n.d.). Psychological biasesrefer to inclinations towards deduction in persuaded ways that could likewise prompt the methodical disparity from any standard ofthe rationalityotherwise practical insight (Koele, 1992). There are a few intellectual biasness: Affirmation Bias-People really will in general concur with individuals who concur with them. In the principal situation since the arrangement is occurring in the midst of a competitor and a business. As a matter of fact it is the particular method of the conduct which prompts such inclination named as affirmation predisposition which is the regularly oblivious activity of the referencing only to those whose viewpoints really fuel different gatherings prior deduction, while at same time giving essentially no consideration to the speaker or releasing his suppositions likewise compromise own reality see (Besharov, n.d.). Accordingly this predisposition will clearly help the up-and-comer in first situation to manage his issues and boil down to a common end which would help both the up-and-comer just as the business. The choice taken here will help both the gatherings in shared arrangement and obviously both can achieve the upside of the choice as the merchant will have the option to sell at beneficial rate along these lines persuading the purchaser and making him pay a bonus. Dismissing Probability-This can be another circumstance that may happen in the second situation where I will purchase a recycled vehicle in an area where various venders of recycled vehicle exist. Here clearly my haggling power is extremely high yet the dealer with whom I am at present bartering may be charging more significant expense because of the better quality that he is giving me. Later I may go up against a circumstance where I may locate that different venders in the neighborhood providing lower quality vehicle (Aberegg, 2012). In any case, for this situation I am disregarding this likelihood and proceeding with the arrangement. Additionally since recycled vehicle is being purchased there are odds of internal harm and some inconspicuous damages in the vehicle for which I am really paying a huge sum. Overlooking this likelihood I am keen on purchasing the vehicle. This circumstance is called disregarding the likelihood. Taking choice in such a circumstance will clearly be a tu multuous undertaking for me yet I have to respond cautiously and proceed according to my genuine choices. End: In both the above circumstances, the two gatherings need to act quietly and serenely and subsequently attempt to sift through the issue commonly in light of the fact that individuals responding contrarily frequently will in general toss the ball in others court. Therefore this collaboration should be quiet and requests parcel of patient and legitimate comprehension of both the gatherings for understanding the issue properly. Basically here untruths the insights about the arrangement and haggling and furthermore realities identified with sorts of exchange separates that can be applied in both the circumstances and help to tackle the issue. Power and Corruption - Literature Essay Samples

Blake explores ideas of power and corruption consistently throughout his two collections. Most notably corruption tends to focus around particular elements of society such as the Church with which Blake himself took issue. Power is interesting as it is seen in a variety of forms through the contrasting lenses of innocence and experience but often ties in with corruption as Blake makes scathing indictments of its abuse in society. In a large portion of his poetry Blake takes aim at the institutionalized religion of the day which he believed had corrupted the true doctrines of Christianity, often at the expense of the poor and innocent in society. Such corruption is explored in his poems that center on the suffering or abuse of innocent child figures; for example, the Holy Thursday poems describe the event that took place in London each year, in which wealthy Church benefactors would parade orphans through the streets to St. Paul’s so they may give thanks for their patron’s generosity. Blake takes the role of the indignant observer who sees the hypocrisy in the Christian benefactor’s behavior. This is best conveyed through the symbol of the Church’s ‘Fed with cold and usurous hand?’ which creates a juxtaposition between the Christian act of generous feeding and charity and the practice of usury- in which such benefactors would take advantage of the poor, either through l oans which perpetuated their poverty or through the demand of service from these children in return for their education. Blake exposes through the hand, which acts as a symbol for the Church and possibly society, the corruption within the Christian principle of philanthropy. Furthermore, poems such as the Chimney- Sweeper and the Little Black Boy reveal how Christian promises of afterlife were used to excuse the immense suffering of these children who were enslaved or persecuted in life. Both of the boy narrators, using a certain and accepting tone to reveal their naivety concerning the abuse, talk about shedding metaphors for the body such as ‘coffins of black’ and ‘black’ and ‘white cloud’s in order to find happiness with God away from this world in which they suffer. This reveals how innocence was forced into suffering through their ‘duty’ by the promise of reward from the Christian leaders of the day- thus showing both a huge a buse of the power over innocence and a corruption of Christian beliefs in the afterlife in perpetuating suffering. This theme of an abuse of innocence is the main focus of power concerning the innocent narrators. For the children in Songs of Innocence, power such as that of God is seen as benevolent with poems like The Lamb creating a sense of safety and assurance through the confident, positive, pastoral imagery such as ‘vale’s and ‘meads’ aswell as the soft and gentle phonetics such as ‘l’ and ‘m’ sounds in ‘Little lamb who made thee?’. The same power however in Experience is something to be feared, as reflected through the use of antitypes in The Tyger. Here the language is much harsher with plosives and fricatives and a dropped syllable creating a harder, masculine rhyme- the tiger, also God’s creation embodies something terrifying and surrounded by imagery of industrial fire such as ‘furnace’ and ‘fire of thine eyes’. This demonstrates the tendency for power to be viewed as something dangerous a nd automatically deadly thereby showing how Experience has become accustomed to such tyrannical or frightening manifestations of power- perhaps referencing the monarchy or the terror of the French Revolution which unfolded between the writing of Innocence and Experience. On the other hand however, even the innocent poems suggest the abuse they are open to through their ready acceptance of power as benevolent. In The Lamb, for example, although perfectly positive, the nursery rhyme structure created by the use of refrain and bouncy ballad verses also carries a darker double meaning. The use of question and answer such as ‘Dost thou know who made thee?’ ‘Little lamb I’ll tell thee’, complimented by a very certain tone evidenced through the repetition of ‘He is’ at the start of lines, mimics a sense of indoctrination often created by Catechism recitals- a repetition of Church doctrine used to teach children. This implies that innocence’s ready acceptance of power, perhaps in the Church institutions too, opens it up to abuse by those that Blake viewed as corrupted. Largely outside of religion, Blake also takes aim at the corruption he perceives to be caused by rationalism and enlightenment thinking. This is perhaps most present in poems of experience such as The Human Abstract in which Blake criticizes the tendency of reason to produce abstract concepts represented by abstract nouns such as ‘Pity’ and ‘Mercy’ which, in his belief, have little relation to natural virtue. By personifying abstract concepts- as indicated by their capitalization as proper nous- he is able to create characters which reveal ideas of corruption such as ‘Cruelty knits a snare/ And spreads his baits with care.’ Similarly the imagery of the ‘tree’, typically associated with the tree of life or knowledge in Biblical terms, is now twisted by the raven- a symbol of death- and the ‘fruit of Deceit’ demonstrating how these products of abstract reasoning have created something which resembles the natural but, as r evealed by ‘There grows one in the human brain.’ can be found nowhere in nature, thus conveying Blake’s message that such rational thought has corrupted what is natural in the human form and virtue. Similarly, in ‘The Sick Rose’, again showing his tendency to represent corruption through devastated natural or pastoral imagery, Blake uses a sexual allegory concerning the ‘crimson bed’ and phallic ‘worm’ as an extended metaphor for the damage man’s corruption inflicts on the world. In this case his ‘dark secret love’ may be said to represent materialism as it corrupts the natural forces symbolized in the flower. Blake shows his condemnation of societal forces such as reason, materialism and church doctrine through his exploration of their corruptive impact. This is particularly highlighted within these collections because of their focus on nature and innocence which provide perfect victims in his poetry. Corruption and power are inextricably linked in this way as both are presented as responsible for various societal evils and abuses of the innocent voice. Like with most themes in The Songs of Innocence and Experience Blake seeks, particularly with his presentation of power, to condone or condemn neither of their reactions to power, but simply to highlight the irony, sadness, positivity or naivety respectively.

The Meaning of Life and Death Essay - 3649 Words

The Meaning of Life and Death The abstract idea of life cannot be explained by such simple ideas as being animated, breathing, or speaking. Ordinary machines in this century can perform all of these basic functions. The quandary with defining death is not as abstract and elusive as that of life. The problem of defining life and death has plagued philosophers and the religious bodies for thousands of years for one reason; each philosophy or religion has tried to define the meaning of life and death from only their certain perspective. The seemingly appropriate approach to this problem would be to understand the ideas presented in various philosophies and religions and through this knowledge create a new definition for each idea of life†¦show more content†¦The living have not yet been annihilated (otherwise they wouldnt be alive)† (Cook). Also, according to modern philosopher Steven Luper in an interpretation of Epicurus, death is also â€Å"permanent non-existence†, which is brought upon by some act of biological â€Å"retirement†. This applies to both humans and replicants. Hereinafter, the deaths of humans and replicants should be considered one and the same. The emphasis on death in Blade Runner can be attributed to many different reasons. One of these reasons includes the search for a solution to its inevitable arrival. The prime objective of the replicants in Blade Runner is to discover when they were created. To a human, this is common knowledge, but the replicants are not given this information freely. Although, in contrast to the human knowledge of when they were incepted or born, the replicants know the ultimate length of their life. After Roy finally meets Tyrell, he is asked, â€Å"What seems to be the problem?† Roy answers, predictably, â€Å"death.† Why is death such a problem to the replicants? The replicants do not actually have a problem with death; they have a problem with the brevity of their life. This is why the replicants hope that their creator, the person that gave them the time limit on their life, can extend it. This is similar to the hope held by most humans of a life after death, but beca use the replicants know that there is no such life for them after death,Show MoreRelatedTheme Of The Illustrated Man1694 Words   |  7 Pagesthemes of the novel. Economics for Business Quality Business Product

Question: Discuss about the Economics for Business of Quality Business Product. Answer: Introduction Product differentiation is a concept used by producers of the market where there are many buyers and sellers and where the producers indulge in producing similar type of product. The producers use different methods to make the goods produced more attractive rather than price. The methods can be in form of advertisement, improving quality, discounts and attractive packaging. It is a method used to distinguish its product to sell the product in the target market. Economic profit can be defined as the profit earned by deducting opportunity cost of the inputs used for production minus the revenue. Product differentiation does not exist in all types of market structure.[1] Firms in perfectly competitive market do not earn economic profit. Hence, an appropriate once off expenditure on product differentiation will not guarantee the firms ability maximize economic profit in any type of market structure. The following part of the assignment discusses how the expenditure on product differentia tion can lead few types of market to maximize the economic profit in long run.[2] Analysis Monopolistic competition is a type of market structure where there are large number of buyers and sellers producing similar type of products. The products acts as substitutes for the consumers where they have large choice for the consumption. It is in the monopolistic type of market structure where the firms make economic profit. The main technique used by monopolistic competitive firms to make economic profit is product differentiation. That is they portray that the product is different from the other producers. The condition is applied in case of imperfect substitutes.[3] Monopolistically competitive firm earns profit in long run along with incurring a deadweight loss. Monopolistically competitive market structure behave like monopolists in short run. This is explained with a help of diagram as shown below. Figure: Monopolistic competition in short run[4] Monopolistic competitive firm faces a downward sloping demand curve as the producers cannot change the price of the product unless there is change in the quantity consumed. Firms face a U shaped average cost curve due to presence of both fixed and average cost. All the firms aims at maximizing profit. The profit maximizing condition for the firm in short run is at a point where marginal revenue is equal to marginal cost. Product differentiation occurs when there is no available substitutes of a product and this occurs in case of monopoly. The above diagram shows that firms in monopolistically competitive market will produce till a point where MR is equal to MC. The price will be determined from the point at the demand curve. The firm earn positive economic profit in short run that is market in green in the above diagram. Along with earning profit the firm also faces loss that is market in blue in the diagram. Deadweight loss is a triangle measured from consumer and producer surplus. The more the product is differentiated in the market the more steeper is the demand curve. [5] The monopolistically competitive firm earns positive economic profit only in short run. In long run seeing the firms earn positive economic profit, new firms enter the market. The competition of the firms increase which makes it difficult for the firms to produce goods that are differentiated in nature. Hence in long run the firms only earn normal profit due to failure of product differentiation.[6] In case of a perfectly competitive market where there are large number of buyers and sellers, the concept of product differentiation is not applicable. This is so because the producers produce same type of products that acts as substitute for the consumers. Hence firms in perfectly competitive market also earn normal profit and the differentiation is done on the basis of price. Lower the price higher is the sale and ultimately profit.[7] Product differentiation enables the firms to earn positive economic profit only in short run. There are various ways through which products can be differentiated. The most common techniques used by firm is that of advertisement. Advertisement adds on to the cost of production. It is useful in conveying important messages and information to consumers. Oligopoly is a market structure with only few firms that sell similar types of products. The sellers have power of price control over their product. Hence the concept of product differentiation is not applicable in case of oligopoly. It is only applicable in case of monopolistic competition. [8] In case of monopolistic competition market the two main characteristics are that the competitors perceive over non price difference products and the firms have no price control over the product. The expenditures on the product differentiation is not great to eliminate the substitutes of the product. If the cross elasticities of demand of goods is high in the market the product differentiation will not allow the prices to rise. This will lead the average total cost to rise as the cost of advertisement expenditures will rise. The average total cost will exceed the price charged by the firm that will lead the firms incur loss in short run. Hence, it can be seen that product differentiation does not lead to positive economic profit in all the situations or the market condition. Profit maximization condition occurs at a biggest gap of total revenue and total cost. [9] Conclusion From the above discussion it is visible that expenditure on product differentiation to earn economic profit does not guarantee positive income in all the market structures and conditions. Product differentiation is a concept that is used only in Monopolistic competition where there are large number of buyers and sellers producing similar type of products. Also if the cross elasticity of demand is strong then the product differentiation will lead the firms incur loss or normal profit. Positive profit is only incurred in short run where the firms are able to differentiate its products. Product differentiation will lead to earning of positive economic profit in monopolistic competition where the firms act as monopolist. Hence, In any market structure, an appropriate once-off expenditure on product differentiation does not guarantee the firms ability to maximize economic profit into the future. Economics has difficulty in explaining why wage rates for individuals vary across occupations and industries and within occupations and industries. 2. Introduction Wage rate is not uniform for all the occupation and industries. It varies on the skills that the employees posses and the budget that firms have for the production of goods and services. Economics can explain the reason for the differences in the wages as it occurs through the differences in the demand and supply of labor and goods in the market. Theories of minimum wage, wage differentials, compensation are used to explain the reason for the differences in wages for occupations and industries. Differences in the demand and supply of labor in the market leads to variations in the wages of employees in same occupation as well. Since no two jobs has same characteristics this is the major reason for the wages to vary. Economics and statistics can be used to show the and discuss the reason for the variation in wages of labor in the market. The differences occur due to differences in education and desirability of the job[10]. Analysis Minimum wage theory is a theory that explains the minimum amount of the pay that the employer must pay the employees. The main purpose of the minimum wage theory is to support the unskilled workers for their living. The minimum wage is set by the government. The theory of minimum wage has both the advantages and disadvantages. Minimum wage theory helps in increasing employment level but it reduces the pay of the employees that are skilled and trained. The critics says that minimum wage does not have any impact of the level of employment.[11] Figure: Minimum wage theory[12] The wage differential theory states five reasons for the differences in wages that are: Occupational differences Inter firm differentials Regional differences Inter industry differences Personal wage differences[13] Wage differentials is also known as inter firm or inter area differentials. Method of percentile wages is used to measure the differences in the wages of employees in industries and occupation. Wage difference is the difference between the wages of high earners and low earners. It is statistics that explains the reasons for the differences in wager by using the technique of percentile wage while economics is used to explain the reason for the differences in the wages of employees.[14] Reasons for the differences in wages of employees are as follows: Credentials- The main reason for the differences in wages of employees is difference in the educational qualification and the training that the employee has undergone. People with higher degree and qualification get higher wages than the ones with lower wages. Experience and skill- higher the experience higher is the productive capacity of an employee. Workers who have in demand skills earns higher money than the ones who don't. Industry or employer- Occupational wages across industry and employer. The wages differ from one to the other due to differences in the working conditions, training requirement, company name and clientele. Job tasks-The individual tasks of all the employees vary. Employees who are indulged in doing complex tasks get higher wages than the ones who do simpler tasks. Geographic location- Wage highly depends on geographic location as well. Some states and areas have higher wages than the other. Wages depends on the cost of living and geographic factors. Occupational Differences Occupational differences of wages encourages people to take more challenging and complex tasks as skilled people get higher wages than the unskilled people. Human capital that is the skills that is required to enter the job market varies in people that causes the differences to arise in wages. [15] Inter firm differentials Wages also depends on the quality of labor employed, imperfections in the labor market and the differences in the efficiency of equipment and supervision. A firm despite of being in same location and area ,may vary in the amount of wage that it pays to its employees. Managerial efficiency and other facilities also adds on to the differences in the wages.[16] Inter Industry differences Inter industry differences of wages exists in case of same occupation and same area. It also exists in same industries as well. The reasons for these variations are the nature of the product market that it functions in, ability to pay, skill requirement and unionization.[17] Compensating wage differentials Higher wages can also be in form of reward for risk taking jobs and also in form of compensation. Reward for human capital In a competitive labor market it is the wages that compensates the opportunity cost that they have to incur that is in form of education or leisure activity. Labor productivity and revenue creation An employee who has highest efficiency and contributes in generating higher revenue for the company is awarded with higher wages. Trade unions and their collective bargaining power Trade unions are the group of employees with equal demand from employees. Bargaining power is the power that they hold to fight with Their employees over the demand. If the unionization is strong in a particular area then the wages of those employees is higher than the others.[18] Conclusion Hence, the above analysis shows that economics can explain the reason for the differences in wages of employees across occupation and industries. Various economic theories such as minimum wage theory and wage differentials is used to explain then reason for the variation in wages of employees. Wages depends on the skills, type of work, occupation, education and market in which they work. Both statistics and economics can be used to explain the differences in the wages of employees. Minimum wage theory is the upper ceiling set by the government to help the poor.
